What is a Warrant Canary?

A warrant canary is a method for an organization to indirectly inform its users about a secret government subpoena. Legal frameworks in some jurisdictions allow government agencies to issue secret requests for user data, accompanied by a "gag order" that legally forbids the recipient from disclosing the existence of the request to anyone.

The warrant canary is a workaround for this. By regularly publishing a statement that we have not received such an order, we create a system of negative confirmation. If this statement is removed, is not updated on schedule, or its wording is significantly altered, it serves as a warning signal. Like a canary in a coal mine, its silence signals danger.
